Simplicity 1563: Pajama Bottoms

Pajamas are one of the clothing items I have always wanted to make but never took the time to do so. Maybe it’s because I already own a large assortment of cute pajama pants and loungewear. Well, living mainly inside my one-bedroom apartment for several months now, inspired me to finally make some adorable pajama shorts.

Simplicity 1563: Cozy Loungewear for everyday comfy attire.

I was originally going to trace one of my own pajamas for the design but decided to try this pattern I picked up years ago from a sale. The pattern I used was Simplicity 1563. This pattern includes instructions for creating a pajama shirt, tank, shorts/pants, and a robe all in unisex sizing. The package instructions detailed a finished piece can be assembled in two hours. It takes me about an hour to cut fabric. In other words, this might not be completely accurate for me. Kudos to those who can!

The fabric I decided to use for my pajama shorts was a Licensed character flannel of Nintendo’s Super Mario. Sadly, this fabric is no longer available, but JOANN retailers carries other Nintendo Licensed fabric to choose from.

The pattern directions were simple to follow and provided detailed images for each step of instructions. One thing to note about the pattern is the waistband is incredibly smaller than I anticipated. The pattern suggests buying a 1/2in or 1.27cm wide elastic for the project, however, I wish I bought a wider elastic to make a wider casing. The 1/2in elastic worked fine for my finished project but I prefer having a wider waistband to fit comfortably.

Everyday look being a comfy gamer.

I should also emphasize since the pattern is for unisex sizes; you might have to adjust the pattern to fit your own body type. This is not unusual for patterns and I was thankful for the range of different sizes. I am 5’4”/ 165cm and I had to adjust the pattern’s length quite a bit for my own body. I should point out; you will need to make a buttonhole to fit a drawstring through the casing. The pattern did not give directions on how to create a buttonhole, which might be intimidating for beginners. Thankfully there are many resources online to help you and plenty of tools to make the process easier.

Overall, I love my finished pajamas! It took about an afternoon to complete these shorts and the instructions were clear throughout the whole process. A beginner could make these pajama bottoms with a little help from tutorials. These easily became my favorite video gaming loungewear. Thank you for reading and good luck on your next project!

Finished pajamas are Mario approved!
